Welcome to Emma's Legacy

Emma was born on August, 4th, 2002 to a loving family. Emma was the oldest of 3 siblings, with her younger brother being born on her 6th birthday.


During the summer of 2014, Emma was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Ovarian Cancer which is normally only ever found in middle-aged women. She had chemotherapy and all over types of treatments to extend her life. Unfortunately, Emma passed away around 3:45 am, on November, 18th 2014, she was only 12 years old.


I made a promise to myself that I would share Emma's story, as her story was impactful for many of her family, including myself. 


I trust this finds you well and in good health. I am writing to you today not as an individual, but as a voice for the countless lives touched by the formidable adversary we know as cancer. This letter is not just a collection of words; it is a plea, a call to action, and a testament to the strength of human solidarity. Cancer, in its various forms, has woven itself into the fabric of our society, affecting individuals and families across the globe. It is a relentless force that does not discriminate based on age, gender, or socio-economic status. Each diagnosis echoes not only in the hearts of the individuals directly affected but reverberates through the collective consciousness of communities. As we stand at the crossroads of medical advancements and societal progress, there is an undeniable urgency to intensify our efforts in the fight against cancer. The journey of a cancer patient is a harrowing one, filled with physical, emotional, and financial challenges. It is our shared responsibility to alleviate this burden, to provide hope, support, and resources to those navigating the daunting path of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. In the face of such a formidable foe, we must unite across borders, disciplines, and ideologies. Collaborative research, investment in cutting-edge technologies, and the promotion of awareness are crucial components of our collective strategy. By fostering a culture of open communication and knowledge-sharing, we can accelerate breakthroughs and ensure that no one fights this battle alone. I urge you, as a leader in Emma's Legacy, to consider the pivotal role you can play in this global fight against cancer. By championing initiatives that prioritize research, patient support, and public awareness, we can create a ripple effect that transcends boundaries and brings us closer to a world where cancer is not a sentence but a challenge we collectively overcome. Let us not forget that behind every statistic is a human story, a face, a name, and a family profoundly impacted by the scourge of cancer. "In Lieu of Flowers" by Shawna Lemay

Every Friday, here on Emma's Legacy, I will be showing a poem about grief. This week I decided on "In Lieu of Flowers" by Shawna Lemay.  Although I love flowers very much, I won’t see them when I’m gone. So in lieu of flowers. Buy a book of poetry written by someone still alive, sit outside with a cup of tea, a glass of wine, and read it out loud, by yourself or to someone, or silently. Spend some time with a single flower. A rose maybe. Smell it, touch the petals. Really look at it.Drink a nice bottle of wine with someone you love. Or, Champagne. And think of what John Maynard Keynes said, “My only regret in life is that I did not drink more Champagne.” Or what Dom Perignon said when he first tasted the stuff: “Come quickly! I am tasting stars!” Take out a paint set and lay down some colours. Watch birds. Common sparrows are fine. Pigeons, too. Geese are nice. Robins. In lieu of flowers, walk in the trees and watch the light fall into it. Eat an apple, a really nice big ...
